Overview
What we are studying
The McLean Hospital Geriatric Psychiatry Research Program is interested in learning about how mood disorders affect older adults and the aging process. In this study, we are investigating changes in mood and thinking in participants with and without mood disorders over the course of 3 years. Who can participate
You may be eligible to participate as a mood disorder subject if you: - Are 55 to 89 years old - Have a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder, Depression NOS, Dysthymia, Bipolar Disorder, Type I or II, Bipolar Depression NOS, Schizoaffective Disorder or any other diagnosis of a mood disorder - Are fluent in English
Healthy Volunteers
Healthy volunteers are eligible for this study
You may be eligible to participate as a healthy control subject if you: - Are 55 to 89 years old - Do not have a history or current diagnosis of a psychiatric illness - Do not have a serious or unstable medical illness - Are fluent in English
What you may be asked to do
This study consists of: - For mood subjects: 1 screening visit and 1 study visit every 3 months at McLean Hospital for 3 years (13 visits total) - For control subjects: 1 screening visit and 1 study visit every year at McLean Hospital for 3 years (4 visits total) - Questionnaires about your mood and activities, and tests for various cognitive abilities, like memory and attention - Optional brain imaging scans (MRI).

- Office visit
- MRI scan

What You May Get
For mood subjects: You will receive up to $540 in compensation for participating in the database study - You will receive up to $50 for participating in the optional MRI scan For control subjects: You will receive up to $300 ($75 per visit) in compensation for participating in the database study - You will receive up to $50 for participating in the optional MRI scan
