What you may be asked to do
If you decide to join this research study, the following things will happen. In your first visit, we will ask you a set of questions about psychiatric symptoms to see if you meet criteria for any psychiatric diagnosis. We are particularly interested in whether you have either Bipolar II Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder. Please note that you can only participate in the study if you have one disorder or the other. You cannot participate if you have both disorders. In the first visit, we will also ask you questions about your family background, your history of psychiatric treatment, any psychiatric medications you are taking, your psychiatric history, and how you are functioning in general. We will ask you to fill out several questionnaires. One questionnaire will contain questions about any history of childhood abuse that you may have experienced. A second questionnaire will contain questions about basic personality traits. A third questionnaire will contain questions about changes in your mood. A fourth questionnaire will contain questions about difficulties you may have controlling your behavior. The final two questionnaires will contain questions about problems you may have in your relationships with other people. Your first visit may last up to 3 hours. After your first visit, we will ask you to use your smartphone to answer questions about changes in your mood 3 times per day for one week. Your second study visit will occur approximately one year after your first visit. It may take up to one hour and might be conducted online. In this visit, we will ask you questions to see if you have symptoms of Major Depression, Hypomania or Mania, or Borderline Personality Disorder. You will be asked to fill out five of the same questionnaires that you filled out in the first visit. These will include questions about mood changes you may have experienced, difficulty controlling your behavior, and problems with other people. Following this visit, we may ask you again to answer questions about mood changes on your smartphone 3 times per day for one week. Your third study visit will occur approximately two years after your first study visit. It may take up to one hour. In this visit, we will ask again you questions to see if you have symptoms of Major Depression, Hypomania or Mania, or Borderline Personality Disorder. We will ask you to fill out the same five questionnaires you filled out in the second visit. Following this visit, we may again ask you to answer questions about mood changes on your smart phone 3 times per day for one week.
