What we are studying

This study aims to create a biorepository of samples across all trimesters of pregnancy to accelerate understanding of key scientific and clinical questions in pregnancy. We are looking to understand (1) trimester-specific pregnancy immunity at baseline and in response to viral or bacterial illness and vaccines, (2) the biology of uncomplicated pregnancy, as well as mechanisms underlying pregnancy pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia or preterm birth, and (3) how maternal pregnancy exposures may impact the developing fetus, and offspring risk for neurodevelopmental and cardiometabolic disease in the future.

Why it is important

Due to a significant knowledge gap about the mechanisms underlying normal and complicated pregnancies, there exists a relative lack of effective prevention and treatment for many pregnancy-specific conditions. It is important to be able to unite tissues from pregnancies of different outcomes to be able to improve the health of mothers and babies now and far into the future.

What we hope to accomplish

We hope to better understand the biology and immune profiles of different pregancies. These findings may lead to new approaches to the treatments of and interventions for different pregnancy-related conditions in the future.

Healthy Volunteers

Healthy volunteers are eligible for this study

This is an observational minimal risk study where we will be looking at and collecting samples at the time of your delivery, during a hospital admission and/or during a clinic appointment.

We are interesting in collecting samples such as blood, urine, stool, saliva and other delivery samples that would otherwise be discarded.

For pregnant participants that elect to recieve their flu or RSV vaccines during pregnancy, research samples will be collected before and after the time of each vaccine dose.

Project activities may include:

  • Blood draw
  • Office visit
  • Biosample (e.g., saliva, urine, or stool)

Estimated Time Commitment

10 minutes

You may not benefit from taking part in this research study. However, your participation may provide valuable information about normal and complicated pregnancies that can help optimize health for other pregnant people and babies.
