What we are studying

We are studying how teaching kitchens can help put nutritional guidelines for pregnancy into practice. We know that teaching kitchens have shown to be effective in chronic disease management and prevention of obesity in children, but no programs focus specifically on pregnant women.  Given women’s busy lives, economic limitations, food source available and discomfort with food preparation it can be hard to implement the nutrition recommendations into cooking and eating habits. We want to know how a hands on approach can help women meet their nutritional goals and increase cooking confidence.

Why it is important

Nutrition in pregnancy can affect pregnancy outcomes like weight gain, blood sugar and the size of your baby. We want to help you gain the skills and confidence to make healthy and delicious choices for you and your baby during and after pregnancy.

What we hope to accomplish

We hope to increase your confidence and knowledge about healthy cooking and eating habits in 6 sessions over 12 months. After completing a pre-course survey to learn about  your food allergies, restrictions, and preferences you will attend five 90-minute group teaching sessions during the second and third trimesters of your pregnancy and one session in the 6-10 weeks post-partum time (the period after giving birth). Each session will include a discussion about nutrition goals in pregnancy led by our own nutrition and pregnancy expert, followed by a cooking demonstration by our chef from America's test kitchen. There will be time to eat together and ask the obstetrician, nutritionist, and chef questions.
