What we are studying

Individuals with HIV are prone to an increased accumulation of fat in the abdomen as well as in tissues such as the heart. In the current study, we would like to assess whether a medication prescribed clinically to reduce belly fat (Tesamorelin) may also reduce fat in the heart and improve heart function.

Why it is important

Individuals with HIV are at an increased risk of abnormal functioning of the heart and heart failure compared to the general population. Fat accumulation is one cause of such heart abnormalities. While this is a common problem, there are no known therapies that prevent heart failure in people living with HIV.

What we hope to accomplish

This study tests whether the drug Tesamorelin can reduce heart fat and improve heart function in HIV. Thus, this study may identify a new drug to prevent heart failure in the HIV population.
