What we are studying

We are studying a special type of diet called time-restricted, intermittent fasting in adults with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and a body mass index (BMI) between 23-30 to see if it may reduce the amount of fat in the liver.

Why it is important

Over time, adults with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can develop liver scarring or fibrosis, which can lead to liver failure and liver cancer. Currently, there no FDA approved treatments for NAFLD.

This study is important because it may help us learn more about time-restricted, intermittent fasting as a potential lifestyle-based treatment for adults with NAFLD.

What we hope to accomplish

We hope to learn if following a time-restricted, intermittent fasting diet for 6 weeks can help reduce the amount of fat in the liver for adults with NAFLD.

Public Profile

You may be able to take part in this study if you are: 18 years old or older and have been found to have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on a prior imaging test or a liver biopsy.

If you think that you have NAFLD and are interested in this study, you will have a screening visit with a member of our study team. At the screening visit, we will talk with you, review your medical history, and you may undergo blood tests to make sure you meet the criteria for this study.

To participate in this study, you will also need to have a special type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam performed to measure the amount of fat in your liver.

Patients with other chronic liver diseases may not qualify for this study. In addition, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding cannot participate in this study.

Participants will be asked to schedule 3 in-person study visits as well as 3 telephone visits.

If you qualify for this study, we will ask you to follow a special type of diet for 6 weeks, called time-restricted, intermittent fasting. Our study team will provide counseling on how the diet works and discuss any questions or concerns that you may have.

During in-person study visits, we may ask you questions about your health and how you feel, measure your vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, height, weight) and waist circumference, complete questionnaires, and perform blood tests. We may also ask you to undergo an MRI exam to measure the amount of fat in your liver.

During telephone visits, we will check in with you and may ask you questions about your health and how you have been feeling.

Project activities may include:

  • Survey
  • MRI scan
  • Blood draw
  • Office visit
  • Personal health tracking
