Melatonin Sleep Study needs healthy Caucasian non-smokers between the ages of 21-55!

Studying healthy individuals with genetic variation in MTNR1B, which influences the regulation of blood sugar and has been associated with type 2 diabetes risk.

What we are studying

The purpose of the research is to determine the effect of melatonin on how your body processes sugar (e.g. glucose metabolism). We also want to understand if your genes influence this effect of melatonin on your blood sugar. Melatonin is a hormone that is produced by your body especially at night. This study will be performed in healthy individuals with genetic variation in a gene called MTNR1B. This gene influences the regulation of blood sugar and has been associated with type 2 diabetes risk.


Prospective research study participants must be Caucasian non-smokers between the ages of 21-55, and without medication use (birth control is acceptable). To see if you are eligible, please fill out our online survey at (will redirect you to a secure website outside of Rally):

What you may be asked to do


•         Short screening visits


•         One 5-day in-laboratory stay, and/or three 2-day in-laboratory stays at Brigham and Women’s Hospital


•         Melatonin Administration


•         Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Test


•         Biological sample collection (i.e., blood, urine, saliva)


•         Sleep measurements


•         Neurobehavioral Testing


Project activities may include:

  • Survey

  • Office visit
  • Overnight stay
  • Medication

Estimated Time Commitment

6 visits


Up to $1,725 for 5-day stay, $2,150 for three 2-day stays, and $3,875 for both protocols
