Got a baby on board? Can melatonin affect your uterine contractions?
This project is not recruiting.
Overview
What we are studying
We want to learn more about how melatonin is related to contraction levels in women who are pregnant with their first child. Previous research has shown that melatonin concentration levels may be related to the number of uterine contractions.
Why it is important
We hope that this research will contribute to our collective understanding of the physiological mechanisms for melatonin action in the human uterus.

Who can participate
We are looking for pregnant women between the ages of 18 to 35 to participate in our study. Inclusion Criteria: - First pregnancy - Single fetus
Healthy Volunteers
Healthy volunteers are eligible for this study
What you may be asked to do
This study involves pregnant women in their third trimester (38 weeks and over). You will attend a consent visit and fill out initial questionnaires to see if you qualify for the study. For one week before entering the lab, you will be asked to track your sleep/wake schedule. Volunteers who complete screening will then participate in a ~40-hour inpatient stay at BWH during which: 1. You will come into the lab for about two days+2 nights 2. You will receive varied light level exposure 3. You will receive a dose of melatonin 4. We will monitor your contractions and give you mood questionnaires. 5. We will take blood and saliva samples throughout the duration of your stay
