Neural Basis of Loneliness in Mental Illness - Individuals with Psychosis & Healthy Controls Needed!

This study investigates loneliness in people with and without psychosis. To measure this, participants will complete: bursts of surveys, an MRI of the brain, questions about their mental health, behavioral tasks, and a blood draw.

Enrollment for this study is expected to close on Friday, January 16, 2026

Individuals who are 18-55 years old who have experienced psychosis while experiencing a psychiatric disorder like schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder. 


Additionally, individuals who are 18-55 years old who have no history of major mental illness or a psychotic episode and no first-degree relatives with a history of a psychotic illness can participate.

Healthy Volunteers

Healthy volunteers are eligible for this study

Individuals who are 18-55 years old who have no history of major mental illness, have never experienced psychosis, and do not have a first-degree relative with a history of a psychotic illness can participate. 

If you have any metal implants or may be pregnant, you are not eligible for the study. If you have recently changed medications or have a current substance use disorder, you may not be eligible. 

In this study, which consists of five visits, you will complete some cognitive and behavioral tasks, answer some questionnaires and surveys, receive a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, and complete a health assessment, including getting your blood drawn. You will complete simple tasks while watching a number of faces on a screen during the MRI scan. You will be compensated up to $730 for the study.

Travel and Parking Details

There is a parking garage at the Martinos Center, for which we give parking passes at the end of each visit. Alternatively, we reimburse Ubers, Lyfts, and other types of transportation.
