Kidney Health in Type 2 Diabetes
Enrollment for this study is expected to close on Wednesday, January 28, 2026
Overview
What we are studying
Diabetes is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease. We want to learn more about the development and progression of chronic kidney disease in patients with diabetes. Our previous research has shown that some people make too much of a hormone called aldosterone, which can play a role in the development of high blood pressure, heart, and kidney disease. The goal of our study is to measure and follow how aldosterone behaves in people with type 2 diabetes over time (up to 2 years) to better understand why and how kidney disease may develop or progress.
Why it is important
Aldosterone is a hormone made by our adrenal glands that helps us hold on to salt. We know that too much aldosterone can cause high blood pressure and lead to heart and kidney disease in the long term. Landmark clinical trials have recently shown that medications that block the bad effects of the hormone aldosterone can lower the risk of chronic kidney disease in patients with diabetes. The goal of our study is to measure and follow how aldosterone behaves in people with diabetes over time (up to 2 years) to better understand why and how kidney disease may develop. Because of the longitudinal nature of this study, our results will investigate the role of aldosterone in kidney health over time. Ultimately, our research will help inform whether medications that block the bad effects of aldosterone can be used as targeted treatments to prevent kidney disease, or the progression of kidney disease, in patients with diabetes.
