What we are studying

We are using types of ultrasounds to determine the prevalence and risk factors of fatty liver disease in adults with HIV.

Why it is important

Currently, there is not much research on the prevalence or risk factors of fatty liver in HIV-positive people. This research study will help researchers understand more about why fatty liver occurs and who is at the most risk, and if HIV and HIV-medications are associated with the development of fatty liver.

What we hope to accomplish

This research is aimed at understanding the occurrence of fatty liver in the HIV-positive population, and if there any associated risk factors, like past HIV medications.

Public Profile

Adults 18 years or older are welcome to participate in this study if they have been previously diagnosed with HIV, and can commit to a one time-study visit. If you are interested in participating, we will ask additional questions to further determine if you qualify for this study.

Patients with other chronic liver diseases, such as viral hepatitis B or C, autoimmune hepatitis, hemochromatosis, or are pregnant or nursing, may not qualify for this study.

Participants will be asked to undergo:

1. Blood draw (about 6 tubes)

2. Urine sample

3. Ultrasound

4. Fibroscan (a noninvasive scan similar to an ultrasound that determines the amount of fat and scarring in your liver)

5. Surveys on alcohol, caffiene consumption and life quality

6. Vital and body measurement

7. Questions on current medications and demographics

Project activities may include:

  • Blood draw
  • Ultrasound
  • Office visit
  • Survey

Estimated Time Commitment

1 hour over 1 day

Subjects will receive $50 for the completion of the visit, as well as parking compensation.
